New Jersey Window Sun-screening For Medical Reasons

You may have your vehicle windshield and/or front side windows tinted (sunscreened) in New Jersey with a medical exemption only. To apply for window sunscreening, please follow the steps outlined below: Please note: You may not have your windows sunscreened until you receive approval from NJMVC.

  • Step 1- Complete application “MVC Sunscreening 1” You may also request this application by e-mailing SUNSCREENING@mvc.nj.gov or by calling 609-984-2973. Follow all steps on page 2 of the application.
  • Step 2- Submit completed application with Step 4 filled out by your physician and a valid prescription to SUNSCREENING@mvc.nj.gov or:

  • Step 3- Wait to receive a temporary approval “MVC Sunscreening 2” valid for 60 days and a Sunscreening Installation Confirmation form “MVC Sunscreening 3” from the Customer Advocacy Office if you qualify for window sunscreening.
  • Step 4- Take your temporary approval form and Sunscreening Installation Confirmation page to a licensed Sunscreening facility (listed below). Have the licensed installer fill out and sign the Sunscreening Installation Confirmation page.
  • Step 5- Keep the temporary approval document in your vehicle at all times.
  • Step 6- Submit the MVC Installation Confirmation page to the Customer Advocacy Office using the e-mail or PO Box listed under Step 2.
  • Step 7- You will receive a permanent approval document “MVC Sunscreening 4” that is valid for 48 months to keep in your vehicle at all times. Please remember you will need to show this document whenever requested by law enforcement as well as for vehicle inspection purposes. As a courtesy, please roll down your windows if pulled over by law enforcement.
  • Step 8- Renew your Sunscreening document every 48 months using form “MVC Sunscreening 1”.

MVC - Motor Vehicle Commission

Sunscreening – Sunscreening is a process where a thin transparent sheet of film is applied to a vehicle's window to reduce radiation and heat from the sun.

MVC Sunscreening 1 – The MVC Sunscreening 1 application is to be completed for installation of Sunscreening.

MVC Sunscreening 2- Notice of Window Sunscreening Authorization. This form is a temporary medical exemption that allows you to take your vehicle to one of the approved licensed installers to obtain the Sunscreening.

MVC Sunscreening 3 – Sunscreening Installation Confirmation which needs to be completed by one of the approved licensed installers, then sent back to the MVC.

MVC Sunscreening 4- The Medical Exemption card is given to drivers who are approved to have Sunscreening applied to their vehicle.

How do I obtain a Sunscreening application?

• What are the Sunscreening procedures?

You can visit https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/drivertopics/sunscreen.htm which will list all the steps you must follow.


• When do I need to get recertified by my doctor?

You must renew the recertification for medical Sunscreening every 48-months. You need to complete an application (MVC Sunscreening 1) and submit an updated prescription from the physician. The physician must reside within the tri-state area of New Jersey, New York, or Pennsylvania.


• If I have a current Sunscreening medical exemption and want to add another vehicle, do I need to have the doctor complete the application (MVC Sunscreening 1)?

No, the doctor does not need to complete the application unless your current medical exemption expires within six months.


• Can I have Sunscreening on more than one vehicle?

Yes; however, you will need to complete an application for each vehicle. Each vehicle will be issued its own Sunscreening Exemption Card (MVC Sunscreening 4).


• Can I use my current medical exemption card on a different vehicle?

No, each vehicle is issued its own Sunscreening Exemption Card (MVC Sunscreening 4). Any time you obtain a new vehicle, you must apply for the Sunscreening Exemption.


• Do I have to go to one of the approved licensed installers listed on the Confirmation form (MVC Sunscreening 3) and on the MVC website?

Yes, you must visit one of the approved licensed installers listed on the MVC Sunscreening 3 form and the MVC website https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/drivertopics/sunscreen.htm.


• Does the vehicle have to be registered in my name?

No, the vehicle does not have to be registered in your name. The registration does need to be valid.


• Can I get approved for Sunscreening if I do not have one of the conditions noted on the application for Sunscreening?

No, based on statute, only those conditions listed on the Sunscreening application (MVC Sunscreening 1) are eligible for the medical Sunscreening exemption. One of the conditions must be checked off on the application.


• How long does the process take, once you receive my application for Sunscreening?

Once your application is received, it can take 10-14 days before you receive a rejection or the Notice of Window Sunscreening Authorization (MVC Sunscreening 2). You cannot obtain the Sunscreening on your vehicle until you receive the Notice of Window Sunscreening Authorization, along with the Sunscreening Installation Confirmation (MVC Sunscreening 3), which will need to be completed by one of the approved licensed installers.
